Why Major Airlines Were Grounded: Key Disruptions from COVID-19 to IT Failures

As of April 2025, several airlines around the world have experienced groundings due to a combination of technical failures, financial issues, and lasting effects from the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the most notable recent incidents occurred in July 2024, when Delta Air Lines suffered a major disruption caused by a faulty software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. This issue led to the grounding and cancellation of over 7,000 flights within a week, affecting around 1.3 million passengers. The problem was part of a global IT outage that impacted not just airlines but numerous industries worldwide.

In addition to Delta, other major airlines such as United Airlines and American Airlines also experienced temporary groundings during the same IT crisis. Though these airlines managed to resume operations more quickly, the event highlighted significant vulnerabilities in the airline industry’s reliance on complex digital systems.

Looking further back, the COVID-19 pandemic had an even more widespread impact on the aviation sector. In 2020, nearly every commercial airline faced some level of grounding. Some, like Tigerair Australia, ceased operations entirely due to financial losses. Indian carrier TruJet grounded several aircraft after defaulting on lease payments, while Avianca, one of Latin America’s largest airlines, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after grounding its fleet.

Many flagship carriers, including Turkish Airlines, Qantas, British Airways, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, and United Airlines, also grounded large portions of their fleets during the pandemic. While most of these airlines have since resumed operations, the financial and operational scars from those years are still evident. Recovery has been gradual, and the industry continues to adapt to changing travel demands and infrastructure challenges.
